I sold my Acura TL to a guy and made sure he took home paperwork for maintenance I had done as well as a multi point inspection pamphlet from Acura showing what the car may need.
He texted me Saturday saying “The starter motor blew, the battery needed to be replaced, you sold me a piece of shit”
I responded “I handed you all my maintenance records and the multi point inspection papers from Acura. I know they never mentioned a starter motor so I cannot help you for random acts of god. Perhaps don’t beat on the car and don’t drive it like you stole like you did when you took it out of my driveway a couple days ago.”
He hasn’t responded...but I expect an angry wall of text or a phone call.

MEH whatever
you buy a used car from a private seller that’s life.

No one in my family has ever dealt with people like this after selling a car. I've never understood people who think used and new with warranty are the same thing

But aren’t those motors meant to be revved to high heaven?

My TL red lines at 6.5, which was a blast to do but the transmission isn’t meant to be beaten on

I wouldn’t have responded. Never respond.
Or if you do, say something like “you have to take it out of gear before starting”

OMG! A used car needed a new battery?! That has never happened in the history of ever

Had that happen with a car I sold a few years ago. It was wrecked, but the buyers wanted to use some of the good parts to fix their car and scrap the rest. I got an email a couple weeks later saying the shop they took it to had told them the car had been wrecked once before in the area they were using. I gave them a Carfax with the car, which said the only accident it had was when I was rear-ended. Shop was lying to them.

TLs only last as long as they stay with owners that give a shit about their cars, as soon as they go to someone buying it as an appliance or a show offy tool, they’re gone.
My TL lasted 15 years without replacing the transmission: my father kept it long enough for me to see it one last time when I went home for Winter Break. After I went back to school, he sold it and it wasn’t even summer break before I got a message that the transmission blew on the new guy’s trip to Vegas.

Starter motors? Hell yeah. That’s how you start a manual from a full stop, right? Just turn the key, the cranking power gets you moving, y’know?

This was my fear when i sold my (well cared for) Scion tC with ~126k on the clock.
Some went forever without issues, (mine had to that point) but others had the manual transmission shit the bed at 140k. I know it was an abuse issue because owner base. The adult owned ones that weren’t jack-rabbiting from green lights were usually fine.
Sold it to this young girl and her father and then followed them home to drop off the car and take my plate. I drove mine, she drove hers and he drove his, as they had met at my house after work. I wound up following him home because she took off in her POS Civic like it was a race.
I absolutely knew she was going to rip that poor car apart. A real shame considering the condition it was in despite the miles.

Saddest thing - most new slushybox transmissions weren’t meant to be beaten on. Another reason to save the manuals! At least with a clutch you can beat on the engine and clutch but the transmission is spared the abuse. (unless you don’t bother with the clutch that often...)

I only put 7.5k miles on mine but was OCD with maintanence and never used thag trip tronic garbage often. This guy used it and red lined it through the first 3 gears when he took off

Honestly that’s what i assume is happening...because less than a month ago I was at Acura and got a clean bill of health of the starter and battery, i think someone fucked him over

What a fuck. If he gets any nastier, I’d respond with something to the effect of “Here is my attorney’s contact info, kick rocks...bitch.”

More to do with the end of his comment which is for it to not be driven hard. I was under the impression all those Honda engines were meant to be revved hard since you need to get above 4K just to get some power.

I only used that automated manual thing once or twice too. Lemme tell you I was so bad at that I can't even imagine ever being competent at real manual. But just your description of what he did hurts me.

Sold a near-mint RSX to some guy who drove it home cross country, and when he posted pics after he arrived I nearly face-palmed myself through the back of my skull. I didn’t know there were so many things to hit on the open highway.

I know, it was just a joke. He said the guy was complaining about it needing a starter...

Chalk it up to my poor understanding of starter motors and Acura TLs!

With the other car I sold I was much luckier. The kid I sold it to had it for about a year before he blew the engine. He drove it like he stole it everywhere he went...lived a few blocks over from me so I saw him all the time.
